District 3 Projects

Ongoing projects that affect the communities in District 3.

We have been working diligently with City Departments to address a variety of constituent concerns median landscaping, curbs and sidewalks, traffic problems, and clean-up of bikes, trails and intersections.

  • The Route 66 Visitors Center is under construction and anticipated to be completed spring 2022.
  • The South Valley Respite Center is completed and it is scheduled for a groundbreaking soon.
  • The West Gate Community Center was scheduled to open in June.  Unfortunately, there was a fire that has set back the opening until Fall 2021.
  • Speeding Has a Name educational and awareness campaign has been launched.
  • APD Youth Leadership Project a Community Policing model to bridge the gap between law enforcement. Albuquerque’s first APD Lowrider was completed.  (insert link to new page)
  • IDP the Illegal Dumping Partnership was formed as a partnership between the City and County to address illegal dumping in the community and the mesa and surrounding areas. 
  • Major Street Lighting Project in Southwest Albuquerque.  This project will add 215 street lights to major roadways that currently go dark at sunset.  The lights will be installed along:
    • Central Ave. from Unser Blvd. to Coors Blvd.
    • Bridge Blvd. from Central Ave to Old Coors Dr.
    • Tower Rd. from Unser Blvd. to 85th St.
    • Tower Rd. from Unser Blvd. to Autumn View Rd.
    • Sage Rd. from 98th St to Unser Blvd.
    • Arenal Rd. from Unser Blvd. to Coors Blvd.
    • Gibson Blvd. from 98th St to Unser Blvd.
    • Blake Rd. from 98th St. To Diversion Channel just went of Coors Blvd.
  • Phase 2 improvements to Westgate Little League 1& 2 include improvements to the league’s concession stand at Tower Park Facility and is currently in the design phase.  Remediation of the pigeon infestation included removal of the clubhouse on the Junior field’s facility.
  • Improvements at 98th St and Gibson Rd SW intersection will include the installation of new signal equipment at the existing 4-way stop controlled intersection. The project will include mill and inlay of existing pavement, intersection modifications, ADA improvements, signing and striping updates, and intercession approach street lighting.  Completion date of fall 2021.
  • Project is underway to design the roadway improvements at the intersections of 98th St & Benavides Rd to include construction of a multi-lane roundabout, bicycle and multi-use trail facilities, ADA compliant sidewalks and curb ramps, and other improvements as needed.
  • Implementation of traffic calming measures on Gun Club Rd.  The traffic calming measures will include the installation of 7 speed tables on Gun Club between Blumenshine Cir SW and Southfield Dr SW.  To be installed summer of 2021.
  • The new permanent site for the Native American Training Institute will be on 60th & Central.  The site plan is in development to determine the placement of their new meeting portable along with the new layout of the entire lot.
  • 118th South Side Functionality and improvement.  Traffic calming study was done to identify and mitigate any pedestrian and vehicular traffic deficiencies on Dennis Chavez Boulevard to Amole Mesa Avenue.  The study will document the existing traffic and multimodal deficiencies and evaluate potential alternatives to improve the conditions.
  • Crestview Bluff project seeks to protect approximately 34 acres in Southwest Albuquerque/Bernalillo County located south of Central Avenue and approximately ½ mile east of Old Coors Drive.  It has some outstanding natural and cultural resources, including excellent views and recreational opportunity.
  • Improvements at 98th St and Blake Rd Intersection that include ADA compliance and traffic signalization.  The improvements include Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements to the wheelchair ramps, new signalization, left turn lane on northbound 98th Street, and milling and inlaying the entire intersection.   
  • Women’s Memorial Park was constructed on the Southwest Mesa site where eleven murdered young women’s remains and unborn child were found in 2009. The park is located on Amole Mesa & 118th St. SW.  New shade structure to be added by fall of 2021.

 

  • Valley Gardens Park Improvements include: installation of a new fence along the street edge and new exercise equipment.  The exercise equipment includes a bench press, plyometric, steps, rower, stepper, wheelchair accessible chest press & a 3-person static combo.
  • Monastery Gardens Park Improvements include: new fencing along the entire park and new lighting installed in the park and under the current shelter.
  • Silver Tree Park & Westgate Heights Park improvements include: new pipe railing to be installed around both of the perimeters in both of these parks.
  • Intersections made pedestrian friendly with enhances striping & new signage.  The intersections include:
    • 98th and Central
    • Unser and Central
    • Old Coors and Central
    • Atrisco and Central
  • New signs were installed on Old Coors & Yucca that helped ensure the signs, were visible to oncoming traffic. 
  • Implementation of traffic calming measure on Gonzales Rd.  Traffic calming measures include additional striping along Gonzales Rd that include a double white line used to define the parking lane and narrow the driving lane, along with re-pavement of the entire road.
  • New Stop Sign installed on West Glenn and Metzger to help mitigate traffic concerns.
  • Improvements made to Street Crumbling on Flora Vista. The improvements along this road include: resealing of the cracks in the road to ensure a drivable road for the residents.
  • Working with Parks and Recreation department on redesign of the Alamosa Skate Park when funding becomes available.  It is in need of some refurbishing to make it a safer and fun place for the youth in our community.
  • The Anderson Heights Park on Cenote Rd is completed .  During construction it was discovered that some of the designated land sits on an archaeological site, so it slowed up the process.
  • The design for traffic calming measures for the Merlida Alleyway near Alamosa Elementary School is complete and construction should start in the next few months.
  • Work on 114th and De Vargas was completed at this dangerous intersection.  More concrete barriers placed to protect the homes at the intersection, new traffic speed signs were installed and other traffic calming measures put in place.
  • Collaborated with school, local and state officials to place needed infrastructure to create safer pedestrian and traffic measures at Atrisco Heritage Academy.
  • Representatives from APS, the City of Albuquerque, State Senator Padilla, APD and others agreed to work with each other to develop a plan for traffic safety issues at Amole Mesa & 98th Street.
  • The groundbreaking for Sierra Sunset Park at Messina and Amole Mesa was held on November 14th.  The 6.8-acre state-of-the-art park located west of 98th St. and south of Gibson. The park is estimated to be completed by late summer 2015.
  • Sidewalks were constructed on Churchill Rd east of Old Coors and on Fredrick Lane east of Unser.
  • Westgate Little League Park on 86th and Sapphire, Phase 1 was cleaned up and some repairs made to the dugouts to alleviate some of the maintenance issues. 
  • New signs were constructed and placed in Valley Gardens and Alamosa neighborhoods.
  • The Tower medians are getting new landscaping installed with shrubbery, trees and flowers.
